Former European Commissioner John Dalli is to head a reform body within the administration of Mater Dei Hospital, informed sources said today. New Nationalist MP Kristy Debono said she was “surprised and overwhelmed” when she was named as Speaker of the House of Representatives for one day on Tuesday as both the Speaker, Anglu Farrugia, and his deputy Censu Galea, were not available because of other commitments. It was the first time since 1998, since Miriam Debono was Speaker, that the House sitting was chaired by a woman. Asked to comment about the experience, Mrs Debono said that she did not expect to be given the opportunity but was pleased to note that it was the government side which nominated her, a proposal that was seconded by the Opposition.
