The government has welcomed EU statistics showing that consumer sentiment in the eurozone is highest in Malta, for the 11th successive month. The consumer sentiment index in Malta reached 118, 18% higher than the eurozone average.

The European Commission released today the e-Government Benchmark Report 2014 that measures the delivery and performance of e-Government services in 33 countries (the 28 European Union member states together with Iceland, Norway, Serbia, Switzerland and Turkey). Malta’s performance in the 2013 benchmarking exercise has been outstanding, with Malta leading on all top-level indicators across the combined services measured.

Maltese people live on average 90% of their lifespan in good health, a higher percentage than any other European country, a newly published report has indicated. The European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies report also indicates that Malta has the lowest preventable mortality rate in Europe, and that life expectancy on the island (80 years for males, 80 years for females) is slightly higher than the EU average.

Malta's economy grew by 5 per cent in 2016, making it the fastest-growing economy in the European Union that year. In nominal terms, GDP grew by 6.7 per cent. Figures released by the National Statistics Office and EU statistical agency Eurostat showed that the local economy grew across almost all sectors, with double-digit growth rates in the agriculture, forestry and fishing sector (12.4 per cent), professional, scientific and technical and administrative and support sector (11.9 per cent), and the information and communication sector (11.6 per cent).

Malta recorded the highest employment growth from among EU states in the fourth quarter last year. According to Eurostat, the EU’s statistical arm, among member states for which data are available, Malta (+1.9%), Luxembourg and Cyprus (both +0.9%) recorded the highest increases in the fourth quarter of 2016 compared with the previous quarter. Decreases in employment were observed in Estonia (-1.5%), Greece (-0.9%), Lithuania (-0.2%) and Croatia (-0.1%).

Malta has topped a league of countries offering the best rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people in Europe. The league table, produced by human rights body ILGA Europe, measures every country in Europe against a number of factors, including legal representation, protection and policy for LGBTI people. ILGA Europe said Malta had made significant progress on its LGBTI laws in recent years and had the best legal recognition of intersex people in the world.
