Widows and widowers will no longer have to inform the authorities that their partner passed away to start receiving a pension. The authorities will from next week start being automatically informed when someone passes away by the hospital or the residence home they were staying at. The partner of the deceased will then receive a letter informing him or her to go to the district office and take with them their international bank account number (IBAN).

People who reach retirement age will no longer have to apply for their pension since their application will be automatically opened for them, Social Policy Minister Michael Farrugia said this morning. The new system will be introduced on Monday. The first to benefit will be those who reach retirement age in August.
