Some 8,000 families will receive €25 each in an unprecedented move to compensate them for enduring more than 12 hours without electricity last Tuesday, Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi said yesterday. He was speaking after the entire island was thrust into darkness for several hours last week. The blackout was caused by a subterranean power cable fault which led to an explosion at the Marsa distribution centre – the largest energy supplier for the southern end of the island.

Wegħda elettorali oħra Laburista se tidħol fis-seħħ u dan hekk kif il-Ministru għall-Finanzi, Edward Scicluna, u l-Ministru għad-Djalogu Soċjali, Helena Dalli, illum ħabbru t-twaqqif ta' uffiċċju li se jkun qed jisma' lmenti mressqin mil-konsumaturi dwar nuqqasijiet minn aġenti li joffru prodotti finanzjarji u li jkunu liċenzjati mill-Awtorita Maltija għas-Servizzi Finanzjarji fil-kontront tal-istess konsumaturi. Dan ifisser li kull individwu, kif ukoll il-werrieta tiegħu, se jkunu eleġibbli biex iressqu lmenti sakemm jiġu osservati l-parametri taż-żmien imsemmija f'din il-liġi biex wieħed iressaq l-ilment. Barra minn individwi, se jkunu eleġibbli biex iressqu lmenti dawk in-negozji kkunsidrati bħala żgħar. Dawn huma dawk in-negozji li jħaddmu anqas minn għaxar persuni b'fatturat li ma jeċċedix iż-żewġ miljun ewro fis-sena. Bl-introduzzjoni ta' din il-liġi, il-konsumatur se jkollu l-għażla li jew jiftaħ kawża quddiem il-Qrati tal-Ġustizzja jew inkella jressaq l-ilment quddiem dan l-uffiċċju. Madankollu, il-konsumatur ikun irid jiddeċiedi fuq liema binarju jrid imexxi - dan ma jistax jiftaħ kawża maż-żewġ istituzzjonijiet kontemporanjament.

A €500,000 insolvency fund for package holiday operators has been set up to insure against a repeat of the Fantasy Tours fiasco. Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis announced today that a legal notice has been published to set up the fund to protect Maltese holiday-goers from travel companies that encounter financial difficulty after having accepted payment for trips abroad. The fund will be financed by some 70 operators and the amounts they contribute will be based on their size and market share. The issue was thrust into the national spotlight back in 2013 when travel company Fantasy Tours went bankrupt after having cancelled hundreds of paid-up trips. The police received some 270 reports claiming nearly €407,000 in damages, against the company. Dr Zammit Lewis, explained that the new fund cannot be accessed by those who suffered losses before it was set up, but it would protect future travellers from similar situations. He said the legal amendments to protect travellers had been pending since 2009.
